What is the Best Anti Spyware Software?
By Jayson Solberg

“What is the best Anti Spyware?”Lately a lot of people have asked me about the current virus, spyware, Trojan, and other computer threats and I wanted to clear a couple of things up with this. Let me first explain the difference of these.

A computer virus is a program that replicates itself from one computer to another. They can perform various tasks including deleting files and taking over your email to help spread to the other computers. Viruses have been around since the 70s and are constantly changing over the years.

Spyware is the new threat that has emerged a couple of years ago. The driving force behind this is money. Spyware is installed on your computer by using some sort of trick to get you to install it. This can come from a website that has a pop up ad and when you click on it the software gets installed. I have seen this a lot recently from kids websites like Webkins and sites like that. They are hoping the kids will click on the links so that the computer can become infected. This is close to a $4 billion dollar business a year. Advertisers will pay big money to get their products out there.

Once this spyware is on your computer it is very hard to remove. Even for a technician like myself. The files like to change file names and shut off the Anti Virus software. We use many tricks to get rid of the Spyware. I use various tools like Malware Bytes, Super Anti Spyware, Adaware, and Hijack this. I have created numerous blogs for these fixes and no matter how many of these I come across they just never get easier. My best recommendation to everyone is to buy a good Anti Virus and Anti Spyware program that guarantees active protection. These range from $20-$80 a year. This is well worth the money when you think about how much I would charge a person to remove it. Say it takes me 3-4 hours. I charge anywhere from $50-$100 an hour for my services. You saved $100 already!

The average home user gets three to four of these per year. Think about that for a moment and you could be looking at $1000 in repairs just because of some stupid spyware that infected your computer. Now how much did you pay for that computer? Getting pretty expensive to update your Facebook account eh? Or put 130 words on your twitter account? Or so your kids can update their webkins home? Well maybe to get the kids out of your hair for a half hour might be worth it.

Find out how to stop Spyware once and for all from your computer by using very effective Anti Spyware Software. It’s is 100% guaranteed.

Ubuntu Operating System - A Change From Windows in One Move
By Philip Woodrow

When I first started to use the internet, the computer I bought had Microsoft Windows operating system pre-installed on it and like millions of other users I thought no more about it. That is until the viruses started to appear, scaring the pants off everybody, me included. I put up with this for some years, then one day someone mentioned the free Ubuntu operating system, which was the first free Linux distribution I used.

I soon discovered how well written and secure a platform it is. No virus or Trojan worries here. You log on as a user, not as administrator, who is enabled to do everything on the system without question, be it constructive or destructive. Unlike Windows, you don’t need to look for and install a firewall before you can use the computer on the internet, as with Ubuntu, and many other Linux distributions as well, the firewall is already installed and functioning every time you start the system from cold. I find this very reassuring.

My first flirtation with the Ubuntu operating system was Ubuntu Feisty Fawn and I was very impressed with it right from the start. I found it easy to install, and easy to use as well. These two qualities have stayed constant with the many revisions that have occurred since that distribution was first released.

In the four years or so I have been using the Ubuntu operating system, a noticeable characteristic is that with each revision comes a slicker and smarter operating system which remains easy to use and is secure. For those with a keen aesthetic eye, the desktop graphics can be quite stunning. But it doesn’t stop there. There is some excellent free and useful software which is included with the Ubuntu operating system.

If you fancy a change from the Windows operating system, the Ubuntu operating system comes with lots of free software included and in my opinion it is well worth a second look. You never know, you might become an Ubuntu convert.

Today’s Technology presents - What is a Bare Bones Kit and How Can I Use It?

Here on Today’s Technology we are pleased to present you with articles from our guest writers on a wide variety of technology topics. We hope you enjoy this one:

What is a Bare Bones Kit and How Can I Use It?
By Dennis Levenhagen

Probably the only reason you would want to know this is if you plan to actually building a computer from scratch. These kits do come with components that are compatible to each other but you will need things that are not included.

In the event that you do plan to buy one of these kits you need to know:

1. What are you going to use the computer for?
2. What is in the kit?
3. What quality of parts are in the kit?
4. What kind of case and power supply does it have?
5. Is the processor and mother board at the speed and type you need and want for the applications and operating system you are going to use?
6. Is the amount of RAM included enough for what I plan to do? Vista needs at least 2GIG in order to run efficiently.
7. Is the hard drive big enough? You need at least a 250 GIG but I recommend the biggest you can afford. Some kits may include more or less items than listed above.

Good to know stuff

Do you feel you have enough knowledge to do this? You should have at least a basic understanding of how to build a computer. Know what IS NOT in the kit. This is very important! Here is a kit example: mid tower, ram, power supply, motherboard and processor. Now you say: “what is NOT in this kit?” well for one thing it doesn’t have an operating system included and there is no DVD-RW. Just the operating system alone will add over $100 to the price. Vista is more expensive depending on the flavor you get. That is to say: if you get Vista home you will be at $99.00 but other versions such as Vista Home Premium are more expensive.

Bottom Line

Price!! Do you really save anything by doing it this way? It is hard to say but normally not much. If you want to be sure you have the kind of hardware you want and “only” the software you want it may be worth it. Off the shelf computers come with a lot of bloat ware. These are programs that are not full programs or are only good for 60 or 90 days in most cases. Warranty is usually on the separate components. If you buy it from a retail store the warranty is on the entire unit. The thing to take into consideration with off the shelf (store) computers is that they do not come with any programs. Unless you have them already you must buy them. Even the Anti-Virus programs are only good for 60 or 90 days. That is why they can sell them at such a cheap price. They may also have cheap or low quality parts that may not last or last just long enough to go past the warranty period.

Computer Cautions

If you do build one of these, be sure you ground yourself first. Even a slight jolt of static electricity will render the mother board or processor worthless. BE CAREFUL!! Most parts these days are plastic. Even the cases are plastic. Don’t plug anything in until you double check everything. You could blow out the mother board or yourself. If you don’t know how to do something look it up on the internet or get somebody to help you. If something doesn’t work just double check your connections. You may have forgotten to hook up something or you may not have a plug in all the way. Seek professional help if need be.
